What does your training regime consist of on a weekly basis? | My training regime varies depending on what phase of training I’m in, but generally I have 3 bench/upper body days and 2 squat/deadlift days per week with one additional day to work on weaknesses and anything else I didn’t get get enough of in the other sessions. |
What is your approach to food and nutrition? | I’m fairly strict with my nutrition in terms of tracking calories and macronutrients. I’m flexible with the actual foods I eat, but I do try to eat mostly “clean” foods these days. |
Who has been the biggest influence on you in the sport? | I can’t say there’s any one person who has been my biggest influence. I came up watching the likes of Pete Rubish, Eric Lilliebridge, Dan Green and Brandon Lilly and those guys definitely influenced me in my earlier years. In terms of people I know in person, I have been coached by Ger McNamara for multi-ply and by Eamonn Harford for raw and they have both influenced both my training and my outlook on the sport. |
What’s your favorite high & low point to date? | Hard to answer as there have been many highs and lows over the years. I’d probably have to say my favorite high was my most recent meet where I finally hit the 300kg raw deadlift. My lowest point was probably the WPC European Cup in 2023, where a couple of injuries caught up to me, and I had a terrible performance. |
What was your biggest lift/s to date? | Multi-ply: Squat 402.5kg, bench 235kg, deadlift 320kg. Raw: Squat 242.5kg (bare knees), bench 165kg, deadlift 300kg |
What was your favorite/best competition to date? | Probably my most recent comp, the IPO Charity 2024. It meant a lot to me to finally hit 300kg raw deadlift, and I also hit small squat and total PR’s. |
Is there anything you would like to include or see changed within your sport? | Honestly, not really. I like the sport how it is. I would maybe like to see a bit of a resurgence in multi-ply, as the numbers actively competing in it are very small at the moment in Ireland. |
If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice, what would that be? | Care about your health, don’t sacrifice it just to get stronger quicker in the short term, or it may become a limiting factor in the long term. |
Plans for the future? | My overall goal in powerlifting is to set numbers that I’m proud of across all disciplines, so raw, raw w/wraps, single-ply and multi-ply. I would also like to put up a big number in strongman deadlift at some point. |
Insert shameless plugs here 🙂 (Gym, business, sponsorship, etc.) | I prefer Liam Beville over Niall Reddan any day so any gym that Liam trains in. “The Fellowship Of The Gym” will be coming to a gym near you soon! |
