Name:
Khalil Khair
Why or How did you get into lifting?
I am a PhD student with a passion for martial arts and have been involved in lifting for about five years, beginning in college. Being active in various sports, I needed a new way to manage the stress and demands of my academic pursuits. During particularly intense periods, I felt overwhelmed and sought ways to maintain both my physical health and mental well-being. One day, my friend Abdou invited me to join him at King’s Gym for a powerlifting session. Intrigued by the benefits he described, I decided to venture into this new sport.
What music do you listen to while you train?
I typically train without personal music, so I just listen to whatever music is playing at the gym.
Where do you currently train?
King’s Gym – Limerick City
Who do you currently train with/coached by?
I coach myself and usually train alone. However, I always enjoy training sessions with my bros Abdellatif “La drogue”, Abdou “Dowi” , Niall “Marshall”, whenever possible.
What is your favourite pre or post training/recovery tip?
I focus on eating well and sometimes treat myself to a substantial meal. If time allows, I like to recharge with an hour-long nap after training. For further relaxation, I find hot baths beneficial.
What is your favourite lift and why?
I favour the deadlift because it serves as a powerful outlet for releasing anger and other intense emotions. It challenges me to focus intensely on technique and form, providing both a physical and psychological test.
What is your favourite memory from a competition?
One memory that stands out is from my first competition in the GPC Summer Open in Dublin, 2024. I was accompanied by a group of incredible and strong lads. During that competition, I achieved a new personal best in the deadlift, which was an exhilarating moment, like an adrenaline blast.
What other sports or interests are you involved in? What are you doing when you’re not lifting?
I enjoy swimming and playing football. Apart from physical activities, I’m also pursuing a PhD in Applied Linguistics. In my leisure time, I like watching anime and various series.
