Aimee Cunningham

Name?

Aimee Cunningham

Why or How did you get into lifting?

I only started going to the gym and working out about a year ago- I would’ve never been into anything other than walking. I got approached in the gym in January this year by my now coach Tara McManus. She noticed I was lifting heavy enough and got me to get in under a squat bar! From then I was hooked and started watching Tara more when she trained, got her to show me how to deadlift and bench properly. She saw the potential in me before I ever knew it was there, now she’s genuinely changed my life for the better and so has powerlifting!

Where do you currently train?

Ironworx with the team when I can, but SG Elite Fitness at home

What music do you listen to while you train?

It really depends, some days it’s a mix of Kanye West, Travis Scott or something like that, other days it’s Foo Fighters or Paramore. When I train with Tara it’s usually something upbeat but it’s only background noise, I prefer to focus on what she’s telling me when I lift.

Who do you currently train with/coached by?

Tara McManus and Ironworx

What is your favourite pre or post training/recovery tip?

I tend to train late on the evening, so I have a high protein dinner waiting for me at home or at least a protein shake, also taking magnesium for sleep and any other supplements like EAA for my body to recover.

What is your favourite lift and why?

Squat has to be my favourite lift! I feel so strong and confident when I squat it’s like I get into a little world of my own! It’s also my strongest lift and each session feels like a grind that really pays off.

What is your favourite memory from a competition?

I’ve only competed in Summer Slam by Ironworx so far! For my first and only competition I’ve been in it was just the teams support that stood out the most to me! I didn’t manage my caffeine intake the best that day and crashed halfway through the day, but it didn’t take long to get my energy levels back up when I had so many people there for me to support and uplift me.

What other sports or interests are you involved in? What are you doing when you’re not lifting?

I’m usually always doing some type of training, I’ll go walking or go into the gym to do some stretching, core and cardio. When I’m not, I’m with my family, my boyfriend, my friends or my dogs!
